The following are cross-sectional microstructures of two nominally identical baseball bats made using two different aluminum alloys. The first one is a conventional 7x7x type aluminum alloy. The second one is the Scandium Aluminum alloy now being used commercially in baseball bats. Both have been extruded from billet down to approximately 2" diameter seamless tube.
The significantly refined grain size results in a strength increase to 97 ksi (670 MPa) yield strength.
